I recently followed a lasercut initiation at Buda::Lab in Kortrijk.
Initially I thought this would be 80% learning about how the lasercutter works, but actually you spend the majority of your time making an appropriate image. The actual cutting parts only takes a matter of seconds.

I selected the following Sonic image as a design:

After that I imported the image in Inkscape, a free tool to make vector illustrations.
You have to convert the image to fine colored lines, that give instructions to the lasercutter:
- Red lines: cut through the wood
- Blue lines: just draw a line in the wood

The actual printing goes very fast, and this is the result:
